IBM i 6.1.1 is supported on the POWER7 Model 750. New machine orders with IBM i are available in eConfig and IBM i 6.1.1 becomes generally available on March 16, 2010.
There are no serial number saving MES upgrades to the Model 750 from any POWER5 or POWER6 550/M50/8204 servers. Replacement servers should be ordered. 5250 Enablement will need to ordered if required. Licensed Program Products can be moved to the new sever. IBM i OS is not transferable without using PRPQ P84523. This PRPQ enables the transfer of installed IBM i licenses to the new 750 for a charge. See the PRPQ for details.

There are serial number saving MES upgrades to the Model 770 and the 780 from the POWER6 9117-MMA only. Unfortunately, eConfig support for these upgrades will not be available until April, and upgrades do not GA until June 4, 2010. There are no upgrades from POWER5/5+ to POWER7.
Upgrades are still available from 9406 Power5/5+ 570 servers to the POWER6 9117-MMA. If serial number protection is paramount due to some ISV solution considerations, you should upgrade to POWER6. You then have the option to upgrade to POWER7 when needed.
Upgrades to both POWER6 and POWER7, IBM i, Licensed Program Products, and 5250 Enablement are carried over as part of the upgrade process at no additional charge.

Statement of General Direction - POWER6 520
The following is included in Announcement Letter 110-014 "IBM Power Systems enhanced with new features" dated February 9, 2010.
IBM plans to provide upgrade paths in 2010 from the POWER6 Power 520 2- and 4-core servers to the next-generation POWER7 processor-based entry servers. All statements regarding IBM's plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice. Any reliance on these statements of general direction is at the relying party's sole risk and will not create liability or obligation for IBM.
Upgrades will be from POWER6 8203-E4A only.
No POWER5 upgrades are forthcoming. This statement intends to protect the
investment of both hardware and software investments, especially IBM i OS
processor and End User entitlements. There is no PPRQ available that enables
the transfer of IBM i processor or end user entitlements from a 520 to a
different serial number server.
Customers who have an upgrade path from 9406-520 Enterprise Editions should take advantage of the current upgrades to the 8203-E4A, since they can acquire end user entitlements at a highly reduced rate (60% lower than normal) . They can subsequently upgrade to POWER7 and have the OS entitlements carry over. Replacement POWER7 servers will require the re-purchase of IBM OS processor and end user entitlements.
